Engagement Ring

The tradition of giving and receiving an engagement ring dates far back into history. In the 15th century, Mary of Burgandy received a diamond engagement ring from her intended, Archduke Maximillian. This one act impacted our lives to this day. Most married women can remember the ring they received over the marriage proposal!

Several factors should be involved when choosing and purchasing an engagement ring. The first factor is cost. Some of the younger generation are beginning the rest of their lives and cannot afford a large diamond ring. Some divorcees may want to outdo the previous spouse in the selection of the ring. Others have actually tattooed a ring on the fingers to symbolize a piece of jewelry. However, spending wisely on this most important item is sure to produce the desired results!

Engagement rings vary in price from under a hundred dollars to infinity almost. Platinum is a common choice for engagement rings due to its strength and durability. White gold is often less expensive with somewhat of the same look as platinum. White gold is almost half the price, but will not usually last as long as an expensive platinum ring.

An engagement ring should not cause financial hardship, but should be regarded as a stepping stone to the all important wedding day. Most women will display the ring proudly, no matter what the cost.

EngagementThe second factor to consider is the cut and style of the stone. Most traditional engagement rings contain at least one diamond. The diamond is one of the hardest substances on earth and is priced as such. However, the cut, clarity, color, and carat should be considered. Base your purchase on the bride-to-bes style and setting preferences. Consider asking her friends or family members for their input in this area. The bride hopefully will be wearing the ring for a long time and it is best that she like it! Your jeweler will also be able to advise you on a setting that will best accommodate her lifestyle. An avid athlete may not like a gigantic diamond that might get caught on something, causing the stone to be lost.

Last, but not least, make sure the ring is sized correctly. Perhaps her mother knows her ring size. You may have access to another ring to use to correctly size her engagement ring. No woman would want to return a newly received ring to be resized. A properly sized ring will show her you are considerate about the smaller details.

It is important to consider the wedding band that will accompany the engagement ring. It need not be purchased as a set; however, it should be of the same precious metal and style as the engagement ring. These jewelry pieces are meant to last a lifetime and should look good doing so!

Enjoy the moment of presenting your intended with her engagement ring. It is a memory you will carry with you the rest of your lifetime.
